Ujung Water Palace
The Taman Ujung or Ujung Water Palace was also named as Taman Soekasada was built in 1919 and constracted by the late King of Karangasem, I Gusti Bagus Jelantik. This palace was built to welcome and serve important guests and Kings from other country.
Taman Soekasada Ujung lies at Tumbu village, Karangasem district, about 85 km from Airport Denpasar and 5 km from Amlapura.

Taman Ujung
The architecture is a blend of several cultures; a western style was implemented for the gazebo, the arches are Middle Eastern, and the plentiful detail carving is Balinese. This place has been announced to be a cultural tourist object and one of several cultural heritages exist in Karangasem Regency. There are 3 big ponds inside the area. In the middle of the main pond, there is a building that connected to the edge of the pond by 2 bridges. On the most tip of the highest level of this complex is a great statue of “warak” (rhinoceros). Beneath the warak there is a Bull statue. From this high place we will see a marvellous view of sea, the mount Rinjani in Lombok and hills with lush and green forest, the beauty of Mount Agung combined with the green terraced rice fields.
Ujung Water Palace has been deteriorating for some time and was extensively damaged by the explosion of Mount Agung in 1963 and the big earthquake in 1979.

I was there around 4 pm the day before it was destroyed by the earthquake. That would have been November or December of 1979. I probably have the last pictures taken of the palace, because we were the last people allowed in that day. In this picture it looks pretty much like it was, except there were many more trees near the main building.

I’ll try to dig one up. Can you put it up, if I send one along? It might be a large file and will probably have to be reduced.
