Bali this year 2008 is honored as the host of the 1st Asian Beach Games, 18-26 October. I’m sure Bali has been choose because we have some beautiful and famous beaches. And the place of the games located in the area of Kuta, Sanur, Nusa Dua, and Serangan Island.

The information from its official website the games are all related to beach such as Surfing, Wind Surfing, Jet ski, Beach Volleyball, etc. But I’m not sure why body building and pencak silat (asian martial art) are included in this game. The official games mascot is Bali Starling or “Jalak Bali” is one of bird under protection by the government. The participant of the games comes from around 45 countries and regions in Asia.

I have been fascinated by the whole concept of The Beach Games since I first heard about it when I was visiting some friends in Manila 2 months ago on the Solar Sports Network. At first I honestly thought it was a well-played joke to make fun of the Beijing Olympics, but when I found out there was actually a real website that they flashed on the TV, I went on my cousin’s computer to see the site. It amazed me not only how well organized the events were, but some of the sports that I saw samples of were things I have never seen before. One in particular that really sparked my interest was Pencak Silat. I have never seen anything like that. The stipulations, endurance, and time consumption of this event reminds me a lot of a 12-hour Rogaine event. Of course they’re two totally different types of events, but the skill set of such an athlete was my premise for comparing the two. From what I’ve read about the Asian Beach Games, it seems that everything turned out to be a raving success. Congratulations to the hosting country, the 6,000 + athletes that participated, and all of the volunteers and promoters for making something on such a scale turn out just as planned if not exceeding it.
